Last Friday, Paul McCartney took a little break before he hit the stage for his “One On One” tour at Portland’s Moda Center to presented a special PETA award to Portland Mayor Charlie Hales who’s city was deemed: Most Vegan-Friendly City in the U.S.
PETA went through restaurant menus and reviews from across the country to compile their list of the Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities in the U.S. This list included runner’s up Los Angeles and New York. There were a few newcomers to the kist which included Nashville, TN. and Honolulu.
“American cities are doing more than ever to meet the skyrocketing hunger for hearty meat-free burgers, deliciously decadent dairy-free desserts, and other plant-based fare,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Every vegan-friendly city on PETA’s list is making the world a better place for animals, the environment, and diners’ health.”
With the prevalence of vegan-friendly eateries, Portland claimed the list’s top spot. Tracking trending terms like “vegan strip mall,” “vegan cheese shop,” and “vegan bakeries,” Yelp’s analysis stated that one in six Oregon restaurants is vegan. In comparison, Los Angeles (first runner-up) can boast more than 600 vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants and other businesses, including celebrity fave, Crossroads. New York (third place) is now known for its fine vegan-dining at Blossom and Candle 79, as well as speedy counter-service eateries like by CHLOE and Terri.
Coming in at fourth-place was Detroit, where the urban-farming and food-justice movement is in full swing at eateries like Detroit Vegan Soul and all-vegan eateries such as Vegan Vee Gluten-Free Bakery, Avo, and Coco Greens Vegan Café set Nashville firmly in fifth place. Not far behind is San Diego (sixth place) with it’s vegan death-metal cocktail bar Kindred. Honolulu, with restaurants like Simple Joy Vegetarian Cuisine and Greens & Vines, is number seven. Vegan Food Trucks like delicious BBQ Revolution brought Austin, Texas in at number eight. Following at number nine is Seattle—home of the country’s first vegan pizza place, Pizza Pi Vegan. Last, but in no way least, Richmond, Virginia complete’s PETA’s list , coming in at number 10, thanks to its hip and vegan-friendly hangouts such as Strange Matter.
Some great eateries for Vegans and non-Vegans alike.
