World Renowned guitarist Stanley Jordan to play The Mint in Los Angeles on February 1. The show, Stanley Plays Jimiis a new concept that showcases Stanley performing as Jimi Hendrix in full costume. He will play his iconic songs and take you back to the glory days when Rock and Roll ruled the world. “It’s my fantasy Jimi Hendrix concert, if he were still alive and playing today,” says Stanley. The Stanley Jordan band is a trio and features Stanley on guitar; Thierry Arpino on drums, and Gary Kelly on bass guitar.
It may be surprising that Stanley Jordan would take on a project like this, Stanley is a well-known guitarist with a signature style, four Grammy nominations, a cameo in a Blake Edwards film (Blind Date), and has appeared on TV numerous times including: Jimmy Fallon, David Letterman, Jay Leno and Johnny Carson. “I feel a strong connection to Jimi Hendrix because he was the first guitarist I emulated as a child. Out of love for Jimi and his music I have a strong desire to try to keep his legacy alive,” adds Jordan.
Stanley Jordan will release a new record Spring 2020. It will be his first new album in 9 years. Feather in the Wind is a wonderful eclectic blend, featuring Stanley’s Brazilian artists/friends, keyboards and vocals from Stanley, which will be a special treat.
Stanley’s 1985 album Magic Touch scored the number #1 spot on Billboard’s Jazz chart for 51 weeks. Stanley has shared the stage/ recorded with jazz artists such as Benny Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Billy Cobham. “I played rock and blues before I played jazz. In fact, Jimi’s constant searching for new sounds inspired me to move toward jazz in the first place,” explains Stanley.
Stanley is thrilled to step onto the stage as Jimi Hendrix; which he feels adds a theatrical element to the show. “This is not a comedic caricature nor a theatrical play, it’s a concert built upon a sincere and heartfelt effort to recreate the jaw-dropping experience of witnessing Jimi Hendrix live,” explains Stanley. The extra touch of portraying the Hendrix of today rather than yesterday, keeps the show creative and fresh for both Stanley and the audience.
Stanley Plays Jimi, is a new project that is based on an old idea. “Back in 1970 when Stanley was 11 years old, he was saddened when he heard of Jimi’s passing. He decided back then to continue his legacy, and took up guitar. His new show, Stanley Plays Jimi, A Jimi Hendrix Tribute is an ode to his legacy, his timeless music and his electrifying live performances.
