The 2016 Tony Awards

Tony-winning host James Corden opened the show, which was broadcast live from New York City’s Beacon Theatre, with a tribute to the victims of the massacre that killed 50 people and injured 53 others at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando early Sunday morning.

“Hate will never win. Theater is a place where every race, creed, sexuality and gender is equal, is embraced and is loved.”- James Corden

The smash hip-hop musical about founding father Alexander Hamilton, “Hamilton” dominated the musical categories at the 2016 Tony Awards, winning Best Musical and earning a total of 11 awards, which just falls short of the record 12 Tony Awards that was set in 2001 by Mel Brooks’ musical “The Producers.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show’s creator and star, won for his book and score. Best Actor in a Musical went to Miranda’s co-star, Leslie Odom Jr., for his portrayal of Aaron Burr. “Hamilton” director Thomas Kail and performers Daveed Diggs and Renee Elise Goldsberry also received recognition.

Non-Musical “ The Humans” a Stephen Karam’s drama won four awards, including Best Play, scenic design and supporting performers Reed Birney and Jayne Houdyshell.

Jessica Lange won her first Tony for the Eugene O’Neill revival “Long Day’s Journey Into Night.”

Frank Langella won his fourth Tony for Best Actor in a Play for “The Father.”
