JOSEFINA LOPEZ’S CASA 0101 THEATER NEEDS YOUR HELP TO REACH ITS GOAL

Josefina López, Founding Artistic Director of CASA 0101 Theater in Boyle Heights, CA announced today that CASA 0101 Theater has reached about a third of its current Fundraising Campaign to keep the theater’s doors open.  “We’re about a third of the way there.  To date, we have secured 102 financial donors of our targeted goal of 350 donors we are seeking to support us by June 2018, so we can continue to keep our theater’s doors open by presenting quality productions and supporting our local community through education.  Each of our secured donors is pledging $25 a month on an ongoing annual basis to support CASA 0101.  If you believe in what we are doing, please support us now.”

Josefina López continued, “Moving forward over the next several months, as we make every effort to resolve the financial dilemma we are in presently, here is what to expect.  CASA 0101 Theater will present ‘Brown & Out IV,’ A Play Festival of 10 World Premiere Short Plays Celebrating the LGBTQ+ Latinxperience, February 9 – March 4, 2018, along with a photo exhibition by Rolando Rodriguez, entitled “ropa sucia.” (dirty laundry) curated by Jimmy Ceneno, and a Ten Year 2008 – 2018 Retrospective Celebrating CASA 0101 Theater’s commitment to presenting and supporting Latinx LGBTQ+ themed plays and playwrights, curated by Corky Dominguez; Chicanas, Cholas y Chisme VI:  Stand Up!, Speak Out!, March 16 – April 15, 2018; a remount of our critically acclaimed and extremely popular production of Disney’s Beauty and The Beast, The Broadway Musical, produced with TNH Productions, May 4 – June 10, 2018; and a World Premiere of a new play I am writing, called Remembering Boyle Heights, opening on a date to be announced.”

López added, “In addition, to the productions, I will be offering a Five-Day Latino Screenwriting Class at CASA 0101 Theater from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., February 19 – 23, 2018 solely for students who identify as Latino and who wish to write Latino protagonists.

On March 4, 2018, the Boyle Heights Museum opened a new exhibit in the Jean Deleage Gallery at CASA 0101 Theater commemorating the 50^th Anniversary of the East Los Angeles Student Walkouts.  The exhibit was presented by the USC Center for Diversity & Democracy in partnership with CASA 0101 Theater.  As part of the California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities Initiative, teachers Edward Padilla and Corky Dominguez will also lead their FREE Youth Acting Program for Boyle Heights residents ages 16 – 21 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. from February 10 – April 21, 2018.”

Edward Padilla, President of CASA 0101 Theater’s Board of Directors, continued:  “Josefina López and I have been volunteering as teachers of various classes offered at CASA 0101 for free.  We want to continue these important programs for the betterment of our community.”

Emmanuel Deleage, Executive Director of CASA 0101 Theater, added:  “It’s very easy to sign up on our website, http://www.casa0101.org/support-us. Once we have reached our quota of 350 donors, this will insure our theater’s financial stability in the years that lie ahead.”

The theater currently has 157 donors giving at least $25 a month on an ongoing annual basis, but they need to have 350 total donors giving at that level by June 2018 to keep the theater’s doors open.  They are about halfway there now.
