Legendary Tap Dancer Chester Whitmore and his Tap & Jazz Revue will appear at a special train-themed performance, presented by Metro Art, Friday, July 14, from 8:30 – 10:30 p.m. in the Union Station Historic Ticketing Hall.
The show will highlight the history of Union Station and the building of railroads across America and feature classics like “Take the A Train,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo” and “Red Car Boogie.” Special tributes to the Gatney dancers, red-cap porters, and homage to tap legends the Nicholas Brothers will also be part of the evening.
A dancer, bandleader, teacher, choreographer, director and historian, Whitmore has been dancing professionally since 1974. He was mentored by MGM dancer and choreographer Fayard Nicholas and studied with famed performers John Bubbles, Leonard Reed and Clarence Landry.
He and his dance company, Black Ballet Jazz, have performed with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra under the direction of Mercer Ellington, the Count Basie Orchestra, and Miles Davis. In addition, his choreography can be seen in music videos for Madonna (“Vogue”), Michael Jackson (“Smooth Criminal”), and many more. Most recently he choreographed and appeared on screen in the Oscar-winning film “La La Land.”
