On October 18th, Julia Fordham and her band performed at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood. The Brit-born musician/songwriter/vocalist has been performing since the 1980’s and has been prolific in her output of music.
The room tonight was packed with her loyal fans who expressed their effusive appreciation throughout the entire evening. Donned in a black baroque style dress with a flair, her pixie blonde locks falling delicately across her face, the musician held court with her silvery voice peppered with jazzy/folksy tones.
The song “Falling Forward” had a slow and engaging rhythm that drifted along in the beautiful flow of Fordham’s voice A melancholy mood was set with the tune, “Girlfriend” that Julia delivered in a delicate repose. From the Language of Love album, we heard a jazzy and sassy translation of “Call Me” that the band played with snappy accents. We also heard “I’m Not In Love” that featured distinctive solos from the bass player and keyboardist. A delightful interpretation of “Fragile” rang out clean and simple from Julia Fordham’s vocals and the guitarist’s solo. Presenting one of the crowd’s favorite songs, “Porcelain,” Fordham led the band in a rocking out jam that streamed enchanting while displaying the musicians expert chops.
We were treated to Julia Fordham’s flavorful scatting with Stevie Wonder’s hit, “Sir Duke” and then she turned the tides as the band delivered the smooth stylish rhythms of “Happy Ever After.” Fordham slinked across the stage with a delightful knee bending dance while singing in a gorgeous melodic voice. The night was topped off when Julia invited her daughter and friends up to the stage to sing, “Love Moves in Mysterious Ways.” The dancing anthem, “Stay,” was the finale and everyone was up and swaying to the great beat. Julia Fordham and her band provided a thoroughly tasteful and fun-filled performance for the audience, who gave them a standing ovation.
