Bogies Night Club Features Carl Verheyen’s Essential Blues

On July 2nd Bogies at Westlake Village, featured Carl Verheyen, who’s best known as Supertramp’s guitarist.  On this evening,  Carl Verheyen delivered a smoking blues concert that was tinged with rock and jazz.  In his band, he had veteran players:  Jim Cox, keys, John Ferraro, drums, Dave Marotta, bass plus special guest Cory Pesaturo, accordion.

I loved the outdoor patio and the indoor intimate setting of Bogies.  Before one walks into the club, you first enter a luxurious patio area with couches, fire pits, umbrella tables and a huge bar.  Eat, drink, and settle in for a pleasurable experience while overlooking a lovely pond.  The whole atmosphere is so inviting and immediately creates the perfect mood for enjoying the music within the club.

Tonight Carl Verheyen sky rocketed off into high stepping, honky-tonk finger picking blues song, “Take What I Want,” by Sam and Dave.   When Jim Cox wailed on the organ with that unique whirling old fashioned sound, the night was stamped with the message: Get down with the Blues.

However, Verheyen showed off his jamming jazz chops as he and the band ripped open a Charlie Parker tune.  There was an energy pile up of improvisation that flew open when Cory Pesaturo launched his furious chords progressions on the accordion.

Verheyen matched Pesaturo’s wild ride as the two exchanged romping riffs.

Each member of the band contributed their killer chops on their respective instruments.  John Ferraro kept a steady driving beat that laid out the backbone of rhythm, while Dave Marotta slapped those bass strings with funk filled freedom, Jim Cox plowed those organ keys setting a whirling dervish of bluesy colors, and Carl Verheyen delivered his crisp and flawless blues/rock/jazz chops alternately on his three guitars… light blue…golden brown…and red.

The entire night shined bright with high-quality music that either made you want to sing, dance or stomp your feet to the bluesy beat.
